… it’s World Book Night

In a bid to boost reading, one million books have been handed out for free in the UK over the past 24 hours.

How many of those were in Glastonbury ? Who cares ?
All the local writers I know who are involved in this magnificent (and unique) publishing gesture have actually quit the town to participate in events in Bath or Taunton.
So much then for the much-vaunted values of the town as a vibrant creative / literary centre – not much participation to be seen here.

In a way, as a writer (and publisher) myself, I suppose I’m partly to blame. Yes, I did want to participate in the event; but from mid-December onwards, fighting the County’s toxic tory policies on trashing local libraries seemed to be a much better way of apportioning my energies and spending my time.

I wish now I’d made more of an effort to enrol as a volunteer before the end of January; and gone round and kicked a few backsides in local bookshops.
